@nils widal awesome idea with the Trello board. 👍
Thanks for your question.
If there’s no free trade of goods between the UK and EU (and at the moment the political will makes it seem that there will be) we will ship the non-UK units from China to the Netherlands or another EU country and distribute them from there.
We will definitely not ship from the UK if this means that our backers have to pay tariffs.

Anyone in the South getting a machine? I am based in Stuttgart but I will have to wait until September to get my machine. I would love to get the opportunity to see the machine work a little bit earlier 🙂
Maybe I can visit GIS in Düsseldorf?
@nils I registered to Trello… I never used this. what now?
I will receive my machine (3rd batch) approx. next spring and I am living in Berlin-Charlottenburg. I asked for delivery to a piano transport company, since I just learned that 4-6 strong men are needed to transport those almost 300 kg (incl. box). Also the machine should under no circumstances be carried other than horizontal. I suppose this would overcharge usual DHL-people 🙁 Anyway, the piano transport company will make an appointment with me.
There are two things I am worried about: The weight (210 kg plus yarn plus table) and the noise (up to 84 decibel, as far as I remember what Anne told me when I looked at the machine in London last week). I have no idea how to manage it in my old building flat (how much will the floor be able to carry per square meter?!) and with neighbours around me. Already thinking about a huge ugly sound box but …
If you want to get in touch with me (just for sharing ideas or even for sharing a working space (!!), here is my address: email@example.com
Sorry to ask this, I have already looked over the forums but didn’t find so clear information. I was wondering if any people in Germany already got their Kniterate Machines by now?
Well, I haven’t yet. I’m a Batch 1 backer. But I am also asking myself a lot of things…
There are quite a few people in Germany who are getting a bit nervous. Then information policy regarding delivery doesn’t help in building trust after the many delays. Specifically concerning insecurities about impacts of a potential Brexit
Thanks for sharing your comments. We are working against the clock to get machines out. We’ve shared a timeline updated weekly with our backers and also wrote on the blog on a monthly basis. Machine builds are ready to be tested before shipping but we are waiting for the electronics. You can read more here: https://www.kniterate.com/blog/
Brexit has no effect on our deliveries, the machines will be exported from China into the EU without passing through the UK. At the same time, we are actively talking with partners for a possible partial relocation to the EU.
For me I also have completely different questions.
A CEO I know told me that if there is no contract and Brexit comes in, you have to get an export/import permit for the Kniterate first.
In addition, I have called DHL because of the upcoming Brexit problems. Because neither UK nor China are part of the Customs Union after the Brexit and I was wondering how this is regulated by customs duties and delivery. DHL told me that for deliveries of the weight of Kniterate forwarding partners must be commissioned by the sender (Kniterate). According to DHL, they do not deliver such deliveries themselves. The recipients will need the phone numbers of the shipping companies to contact them !EARLY! about the customs office, the DHL employee said.
Thank you all for the quick replies and the information. Sorry to hear that you haven’t received your machines yet but I can understand the reasons for the delay on behalf of Kniterate, too. Unexpected things just happen.
To explain a bit, I was looking for people with a machine since I sadly missed all the early backing periods but would have really liked to use a Kniterate for my upcoming Diploma-Project on bespoke knitted membranes in architecture and design. Since the shipping-period of the current orders unfortunately is way too late for this purpose, I was hoping to get in touch with somebody who’s already got a machine for the possibility of using & experimenting with it or even renting it. Should this sound interesting to any of you or if somebody has good connections to people with industrial or consumer-style electronic knitting machines, feel free to hit me up via PM. I’m thinking about approaching Kniterate directly about this but I assume they’re way to busy right now assembling machines and getting ready for shipping (might try it anyway..who knows).
@lemasch yes, that would be more or less the process.
We will approach each one of you for the shipping.
We have done this three times now (machine in London and for the Twitter job twice) so we have the experience. It’s surprisingly straightforward in terms of importing.
If we find it’s cumbersome for some countries in the EU we can process if through an EU office and ship from there.
So we have two available options and are exploring both.
